Many congratulations to our Sutton Coldfield Division 1 team on winning the Birmingham & District Chess League Championship for the 10th time. We beat South Birmingham 4½–1½ in a play-off at a neutral venue on 23rd April 2024.
Our club entourage was, from left to right, Ioan Rees (Board 3), Mircea-Marius Mesesan, Marek Soszynski, Ameet Ghasi (Board 1), Mark Hebden (Board 2), Golam Ali (Captain, Board 6), Shabir Okhai (Board 5). Not pictured was Henrik Stepanyan (Board 4). Our six-man team, with FIDE-titled players on the top three boards, must have been the strongest ever seen in the League’s long history.
